Colt M1911A1 Navy Contract sn 716xxx
1939 Production

Shown here is a 1939 Colt Navy M1911A1. All 3,636 service M1911A1's
produced by Colt's in 1939 were delivered directly to the U.S. Navy.

716xxx was delivered to the Norfolk VA Naval base Dec 18, 1939.

The beautiful, brush-blue finish is characteristic of the pre-WWII
contract Colts and in this example is extremely well-preserved and
entirely original. Note the large P proofs on the left side of the
frame and on top of the slide adjacent to the rear sight. A smaller
size P proof was used in 1940 and later pistols. Like the 1938
contract pistols, the letter H was marked on the left side of the
receiver next to the magazine release button, indicating final
inspection by Frederick W. Hauff, Chief Ordnance Inspector at Colt's
from 1936 to 1940. Also note the change to a shorter hammer, a
departure from the 1938 pistols.
