Remington Arms -Union Metallic Cartridge Co. 1911 NO 83xx
1918 Production

Here is a Remington-UMC 1911, NO 83xx, early 1918 production. A total of
21,676 pistols were produced by the Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge
Co. in Bridgeport, Connecticut during 1918 and 1919. These pistols were
assigned serial numbers 1 to 21676 and thus overlap the serial range used by
Colt M1911's from 1912-1913. Some references (Meadows) state that at least
22 additional unnumbered and uninspected pistols were produced that appear to
have characteristics of early production.

Remington-UMC 1911's were stamped E.E.C. (for Major Edmund E. Chapman, Army
Inspector of Ordnance for the Bridgeport Ordnance District) on the receiver.
Below the E.E.C. stamp is an eagle head mark with the letter E and either the
number 1 for early pistols or 28 for later pistols. In addition on pistols
NO's 1 to approximately 15000, the letter E, for subinspector Major Arthur E.
Evans, was stamped on the base of the mainspring housing, the rear of the
slide, and the upper left side of the trigger guard. This example bears the
small UNITED STATES PROPERTY mark on the left side of the receiver. Pistols
after approximately NO 15500 show the larger UNITED STATES PROPERTY stamping.

The crude, soft blue finish on these pistols took to wear and flaked easily,
and had the tendency to easily turn brown; thus it is very difficult to find
examples in well-preserved, high condition.
