Springfield Armory 1911 1074xx
N.R.A. marked
1915 Production

This is a particularly intriquing Springfield Armory 1911 variation.
In 1915, the National Rifle Association established a program with the
U.S. government that allowed NRA members to purchase 1911 pistols at
discount. Such pistols, manufactured by Springfield Armory and Colt
in very limited number, carried the N.R.A. stamp on the right side of
the receiver, and were sold to life members and members of affiliated
clubs at $16 each. For comparison, commercial Government Models sold
for $22 each (ref. Goddard). The exact number of NRA-marked Spring-
fields is not precisely known, but is estimated to be in the range
of 100 or so.

1074xx is all correct with s-marked parts, double-large diamond grips,
and the signature SA magazine whose bottom lips fold over the base.
Astute observers will note marks of distinction left by a previous
owner: the front site has been partially filed down and an aborted
attempt to scratch off the UNITED STATES PROPERTY marking.
