Colt Super .38
1929 Production

Shown below is the 507th Super .38 produced by Colt's
in 1929, the first year for Super .38 commercial
production. Only 5,850 pistols were produced that
year. The bright blue, polished commercial finish of
these prewar pistols is simply unmatched by any other
modern day firearm. Arguably, Colt's craftsmanship
was at its peak during the prewar production years, a
time when American work ethic was at a pinnacle as a
result of the impact of the 1929-1939 Great Depression
leading to scarcity of jobs.

The serial number is stamped on the rear of the slide
which was standard for commercial pistols of the era.
Note that the entire barrel is blued, including the
shaft of the barrel, but the top of the chamber is
polished to bare metal. Interestingly, there is a K
stamped under the barrel chamber identical to the K
stamped on 1924 Transition pistols. The same K
additionally has been seen on early 1920's Government
Model barrels. The top of the frame is marked with an
S for commercial sales. Also note the 1911A1 style
slide stop which lacks the mill cut beneath the
checkered surface.
